That’s How I Spell My Name

that's how i spell my nameMy three year old can spell his name, and his brother’s name. Amazing, I know. I’m amazed! Its actually quite simple however, because I taught him through a song. A very simple song.

name lettersWhen I was designing Lucas’ room I decided to make a wall hanging of his name in bold wooden letters. I had seen something similar on Pinterest when looking for baby shower ideas. I went to Michael’s and bought the wooden letters of his name and then some corresponding scrapbook paper to cover the letters. I cut out the paper and glued it onto the letters and then hung them above his changing table. Voila! Super cute decoration and a learning tool.name letters

Next I wrote a little song to teach him the spelling of his name. So when I was changing his diapers we would look up at the letters and sing the song. I would point to the letters while singing and he quickly learned to recognize that the letters were his name.

L-U-C-A-S,

L-U-C-A-S,

L-U-C-A-S,

That’s how I spell my name!

name lettersFast forward two years and now my youngest is learning his name. Aaron, who is a year and a half, will point up to the letters above his crib and eagerly ask me to sing. After we sing his name he will then point to his brother’s name on the other wall and ask me to sing. He gets so excited to hear the songs. He has even started “singing” along to the rhythm of the song with his little “uh, uh, uh, uh, uh”.

nautical room with name letters

The boys room was redecorated with a nautical theme when Aaron came along so Aaron’s letters were nautical themed as well. It was pretty fun to find a wooden lighthouse cut out to add to Lucas’ name for “L” and a wooden anchor cut out to add to Aaron’s name for “A”. I thought it tied the two together well.

What amazes me is that Lucas can sing his name as well as Aaron’s name. When we are out and someone asks him his name he says, “My name is Lucas, L-U-C-A-S”.

I thought I’d share this simple activity and song with you in case you want to introduce your child’s name spelling in a similar way. Obviously you can make any song you want that will work for your child’s name. But if you want to use my tune you are welcome to it. It works best with a 5 letter name but can be adapted to other names as well. I have included a few examples in the audio sample. (Click the audio buttons to hear the samples.)
